11/18 – "Don't ask me if your girlfriend is hot"

19 Nov

Once in a while I’ll be hanging out with friend or an acquaintance of mine who’s in the midst of a 4 or 5 month relationship, if not an even longer one.  We’ll be shooting the shit, and then this person will turn to me and ask, “Hey, do you think my girlfriend/boyfriend is hot?”  (hot/cute/good looking/attractive/whatever).

This puts me in a weird spot.  First of all, if it’s a guy friend asking about a girl, in some cases I’ve been spending the last few months training myself not to be attracted to my friend’s significant other.  Number 2, what does it matter what I think?   It should only matter what you think and feel about your lady.  Number 3, not to sound vague, but different people are into different people.   We’re all attracted to what we’re attracted to, so someone who I’m into might make you react, “Oh, really? Her?” And number 4, what is the point of asking me this question now?

The time to ask me what I think of this girl is not 7 months after you’ve been together.   The time to seek my opinion was when she was a stranger on the other side of the room at that party.

At the latest, you could’ve sent me links to the Facebook pics that Monday morning after the weekend.

What should I say?  “No.  That girl you’ve been seeing for the last two years actually repulses me.  Wanna catch a movie later?”

Stabbing Pen, when you hear this question, run! I’ve actually dumb enough to answer that question the wrong way. Now I just stay away from that stuff…
