5/11 – "Check for 26 cents"

11 May

For some odd reason, about a month ago, I received a check from AT&T for 26 cents in the mail (some kinda refund I guess).  I don’t have a landline in my apartment, and now both cable and Internet service is via Time Warner.  Time Warner sucks, but that issue requires it’s own analysis.

Anyway, this check sat on my desk at home next to my computer for a couple of weeks, then I put it in my backpack and started bringing it to work with me.  I’ve been to the bank several times recently, but always seem to “forget” to deposit this 26 cent check. Now, the check is back at home, on my desk.

This check is a joke, and I would have rather had AT&T mail me a quarter.  I might be losing 1 cent owed, but at least I could use a quarter for the laundry machines.  I wonder if my laziness could somehow destroy AT&T’s “books.”  Despite the country’s overall economic woes, I would laugh if it did.

In my own defense, maybe I’m just embarrassed to actually deposit a 26 cent check, and not just lazy and forgetful.

Yes, you probably mess up their books, with that 26 cents carrying over every fiscal period. AT&T would be so disappointed that they can’t balance their accounts payable. In reality, it would cost several man-hours to process that stupid check – when you factor in the data entry and filing of the check reconciliation records at both the bank and AT&T. (I’m tired now.) :D

Can you imagine walking into a bank and saying
“I’d like to deposit this check please”
“No problem sir, how much is the check for?”
    “Ahhhhh … twenty …. six ……………
    …………………………………….
    Cents”

    Too embarrassing!

Correct me if I a wrong, but it cost them 42 cents to mail it? That is not even counting processing costs to create the check. I think my record is 14 cents. I just blended it with other checks to cash. For me the embarrassment is on AT&T.
