I have no idea why certain memories from my childhood stick out. One such memory was when we watched the movie Gandhi during freshman year of high school in social studies class. Social studies was always a subject I could tolerate. I enjoyed teachers’ lectures and class discussions, but it was the retaining of the information taught, the quizzes, and the tests that I disliked intensely.
As awkward I was/perceived myself in high school, I actually despised middle school that much more. Elementary school was cool, because we were just kids. In high school everyone was basically immature, but still capable of grasping more adult topics, etc.
Middle school was/is just that awkward in-between phase. You’re not a kid. You’re not an adult either, and not even a young adult.
Anyway, watching videos/movies in social studies was always a welcome change, and watching Gandhi was no exception. I enjoyed the film a lot.
I remember in the scene when Gandhi is shot to death, he yells out “Ohhhhh god,” in a thick foreign accent. That is when most of the class burst out in laughter. Either I’m overly sensitive, or fucking kids are just racist and appalling. This was middle school behavior from kids now in high school!
Gandhi is like probably the greatest human being ever, and while he’s dying on film, these kids couldn’t help but laugh. I hope at some point those who laughed get bitch-slapped by one of Gandhi’s reincarnated descendants.
