1/20 – "Criticism (and support) of marathon runners"

20 Jan

It seems more and more people I know these days have either have ran, or have decided to run a marathon.  I think it’s awesome that people take on personal challenges.  Many folks decide to run in support of a good cause, too.

Having said all that, I have some criticisms.  First of all, let us remember that in my opinion human beings are simply not built to run 26 miles.   We are people, not wild animals.  Well, some us act like wild animals, but that has nothing to do with long distance running.

Also, many people decide to run marathons because they believe the training, combined with running in the marathon itself will get them in shape.  It won’t.  You will have a temporary improvement with your overall fitness.  But keep in mind that staying in shape is a long term commitment, and really a life choice.

If you really wanna get in shape, you’re much better off eating reasonably and doing consistent workouts over the long term, rather than maxing yourself out in the short term.

Anyway, my buddy Chris is running in an upcoming marathon.  Here’s the link —- Support him!
