I don’t know if you’ve seen it — that commercial for LegalZoom.com featuring an endorsement from former O.J. Simpson defense attorney and LegalZoom co-founder, Robert Shapiro. At first I was a bit taken aback. All my brain heard and saw, were the words “LegalZoom” and “Robert Shapiro.” After a couple of seconds went by, the name Robert Shapiro rang a bell. “Hey, isn’t he that guy who helped O.J. get off in the murder trial? Not Johnnie Cochran. The other guy.”

Sure, most people probably know Robert Shapiro immediately upon hearing the man’s name, but let me remind you that while it was dubbed “The Trial of the Century,” as a kid, I more or less just saw coverage of the O.J. Simpson murder trial as something that day-after-day just annoyingly interfered with Sports Center’s showing of game highlights.

So anyway, when Shapiro popped up on my TV, I thought to myself, why would I want to work with LegalZoom, a company associated with a man who helped another man essentially get away with murder. I mean, just because someone is famous, this doesn’t automatically mean he or she is a good fit for selling products and services to the general public. But after all, this is for LegalZoom and legal services. So who better to represent an online-lawyering service company than a man who helped a former client literally get away with murder. So just imagine what they can do for you…

And it’s not that I’m trying to judge Shapiro for his actions (at least not intentionally). After all, we’re supposed to be entitled to due process and a fair trial. I say “supposed to be,” given our Federal government’s recent passing of the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act). But that’s a topic for another blog, for now just Google “NDAA indefinite detention.” Because with the NDAA now, even Robert Shapiro might not be able to help you.

I have no problem recognizing and celebrating the lives and achievements of those no longer with us. Often we (not us, but the media really) like to do this on and around the time when the dead person’s birthday would be. For example, IF Princess Diana was still alive, she’d have turned 50 this year. Well, the problem is that she’s dead, and is not 50 years old.

Now, Diana was supposedly a wonderful humanitarian, and probably deserves the recognition — even that which comes posthumously. But let’s not kid ourselves here. For someone like Diana especially, I’d have to say that much her relevance (especially in America) is a result of just a media push to sell magazines and generate TV ratings with specials. In addition to the power of the dollar, we humans just love our dates and anniversaries and birthdays. We have an obsession with these things, and we especially love numbers that are divisible by 5. Our favorites!

In 2012, while there will be some mention, we know we’re just not going to care as much about Diana hypothetically turning 51.

My question really is, when do we stop celebrating dead people’s birthdays? I’m sure they’ll be some hoopla for Diana’s woulda-been 55th, 60th, 65th, 70th, and 75th birthdays. But when does it end? Will Newsweek and the E! Network make their Diana decisions based on life expectancy in the future? I mean, we’ll probably be recognizing Diana’s 100th birthday, but what about 110th? or 130th? It’s not like she’s going to be any less dead in 2091.

m

Family Feud is a game show that’s seemingly been on TV forever, despite having many different hosts over the years. Anyway, yesterday I was watching a show that was from the Richard Karn (Al Borland) years.

The thing about playing Family Feud is that the truth/what you think to be the truth is not always going to be the best answer for the game’s survey questions. What one must do is ask himself/herself, “How would most people answer this question?”

So, it was “Fast Money” (bonus round), and I couldn’t believe how stupid one of the survey questions was.

“Name a month when babies are born”

Wtf?

I swear, that’s what Al Borland told the contestant to respond to. It wasn’t even “Name the month when most babies are born” — which I suppose would be slightly less stupid.

I mean, people tend to be more confined during the winter months, so add nine months to the winter months, and one might think the most popular months for babies being born might be September, October, and November. But then the problem is that earth has Northern and Southern Hemispheres, thus basically opposite climate. Perhaps I’m thinking too deeply about this.

Whatever. This Feud survey question was just plain moronic. “Name a month when babies are born.” Please. Why not just say, “Name a month” ? Answering that takes the same amount of thought, and gives the contestant the same odds of being successful with his/her answer.

With so much negativity on TV, in the news, and propagated by much of the media, it’s quite easy to forget about such an important fact. Between our depleted ozone layer, war, famine, disease, etc, overall as a species, never more so in our history than right now, we’re living LONGER and HEALTHIER lives.

In other words, we must be doing something/some things right.

I think it’s all bullshit, these magazines by the register at the Supermarket. And on TV, a guy with a deep voice says to eat the Hungry Man frozen dinners, and some annoying yuppie chick voice over tells the strong independent woman to eat yogurt.

Whatever. The potatoes in the frozen dinner won’t know if a woman is eating them — and yogurt is decent food for everyone.

The McDonald’s Pregame Show. The Sprint Halftime Show. The E-Trade Post-Game show. Just about every single segment of the game is “brought to you” by some corporate giant.

However, I could give 2 shits about stupid shows like this one.

Anyway, I remembered he was the former governor of Illinois. You know, that smooth fella who thought it be wise to try to sell President Obama’s former Senate seat.

This got me thinking —- Were any former governors recently president? Oh yeah that’s right, our last president used to be the governor of Texas.

Don’t you find it all frightening that here in America, as the governor of one of our states, you are one step from becoming president, but also one step from appearing on a rather insignificant reality show?

Mostly everyone is familiar with this story. Parker and Stone, the creators of South Park, recently had some fun when it came to the question of whether or not they should depict the Muslim Prophet Mohammad in an episode. To me, it’s pretty irrelevant how they even portrayed him. (Mohammad was in a bear costume at first…which turned out not to be the prophet anyway).

To me, this episode wasn’t even really so much about Muslims or Islam. It was about our bizarre society — and how we hold back from poking fun at certain people or groups…and that in itself is a form of prejudice!….at least that was my interpretation. I would think it should be more offensive to Muslims to exclude them from ridicule and criticism, and from being the subjects of humor. To me, that’s segregation, and not treating people equally.

According to revolutionmuslim.com, the South Park episode depicting the prophet Muhammad is a crime punishable by death. The website said that violent retaliation “will likely happen” to the show’s creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The site provided the addresses of both Comedy Central’s New York office, and Stone and Parker’s production office in Los Angeles.

Oh, and also this site thinks it’s swell to post photos of the violent murder of Theo Van Gogh, a captured filmmaker/prominent critic of radical Islam. The maniac running the site also tweeted prayers for Allah to kill the show’s creators and “burn them in hell for all eternity.” Sweet. Way to use free speech to condemn free speech!

In addition, this radical group characterized all of this as a warning rather than a threat. Yeah, none of this seems at all threatening…..

“When South Park got threatened last week by Islamists incensed at their depiction of Muhammad, it served — or should serve — as a reminder that our culture isn’t just different than one that makes death threats to cartoonists. It’s better.” – Bill Maher

I agree, and with this blog post, I just want to formally offer my support for Parker and Stone. I can’t tell you how much respect I have for those guys as artists. And although this is a blog read by maybe 6 people, compared to a successful TV show seen by millions, we all should do our part to condemn stupidity.

Disclaimer ——- I’m not equating all Muslims to those responsible for the website Revolution Muslim, and of course all Muslims don’t share every viewpoint….

….but to any people who support Revolution Muslim, or believe that violence, or threatening violence is an appropriate response when your sensibilities are offended — well, you can kiss my ass, lick my balls, and kill yourself via a method that doesn’t take others with you.

Okay, according to my grandma, if you have a boyfriend or a girlfriend, they will be referred to as your “friend.”

If you have a roommate, she will refer to this person as your “partner.”

Jeff Garlin had a bit on Dr. Katz, which actually makes my grandma seem reasonable.

Mrs. Garlin refers to any of her son’s male friends as “Jeffrey’s boyfriends…”

After Jeff told his mother that she shouldn’t do this, she then started introducing Jeff’s buddies to her old lady friends by saying, “Oh this is Mike, he and Jeff are just friends…”

Lol.

If you’ve never seen Dave Chappelle’s stand-up comedy routine, he’s got a funny bit all about cartoons. He examines his favorite childhood cartoons from his now adult point of view.

One of the conclusions that Mr. Chappelle came to is that Pepe Le Pew is basically a womanizing rapist.

Not only does Pepe force himself upon females, he goes outside of his species, and tries to make sexytime with a black cat, which somehow always manages to get a white stripe painted down her back.

As poor a role model for children as a rapist skunk is, would you believe that it was Speedy Gonzalez cartoons that historically were found to be more offensive? In fact, according to Wikipedia, “Speedy,” was once banned from Cartoon Network, citing Speedy’s Mexican mice friends as offensive stereotypes of laziness, slothfulness, and even drunkenness.

Maybe this is offensive, but keep in mind it was here in the U.S. where it was banned. In Mexico, and in most of Latin America, the people historically are fans of the cartoon.
